Description
Afternoon shadows cast contrast onto part of Yosemite Valley's El Capitan's 2,916-foot (889 m) granite face and the popular "Nose" route–one of its 100-plus climbs–shrinking three climbers (in right, center) to their appropriate proportions.
At 3,593 feet (1095 m) from base to summit, El Capitan (Spanish for "The Chief") is our planet's most massive granite monolith, a great lure for rock climbers the world over, and so grand in scale that it seems unmarked by the passage of time.
